Brightly-colored lights filled the entire Al G. Langford Chaparral Center; the crowd went wild as seven-time Grammy Award Winner Gladys Knight appeared on stage.
Knight said she was so excited to be in Midland; she couldn`t wait to see everyone. “I am so thankful for your love and support and standing by me,” she said. “Ya’ll are the reason I am here today; I love you all.”
Knight took it to the old school as she started to sing You’re the Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me. “When I fall in love I fall in love hard,”
Knight said. “When you find that special somebody, you tell them that they’re special.”
She said go ahead and fall in love; it’s worth it.
Fan Jean Brown was fascinated that Knight was so open. “I love how Gladys was so down to earth, and she wasn’t embarrassed about expressing her feeling and her life through her music,” she said.
Before Knight began to sing any of her songs, she expressed emotion, struggles and events that corresponded with each song. Knight began to talk about her favorite movie, Forrest Gump.
She said that poor man was just running his heart out, so she was going to sing her song I’ve Got To Use My Imagination to help him get across.
Tech Texas Student Jaylee Peoples said she could relate to Knight when she expressed how she thought something was wrong with her because she wasn’t dating.
“I could just really relate because when I was 16, I thought the same thing,” she said. “That was until I found out my brothers were the reason behind it, just like the Pips were the reason Gladys felt that way.”
